At the Maryland Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) Exposition, BA Systems, LLC demonstrated the MediaSentry, the world’s first constant monitoring media tracking solution. Utilizing RFID technology, the MediaSentry can be used as a safeguard against the theft of sensitive consumer and proprietary information stored on digital media such as data tapes and optical disks such as DVD.
“As companies and government agencies collect more of our sensitive data, the amount of our personal and national security information backed up on digital media is increasing exponentially. The MediaSentry helps companies minimize the threat of data loss by monitoring their data storage assets while they are at rest”, said BA Systems President, William Mapp.
The MediaSentry is the world’s first fully integrated and scalable media storage and tracking system to use RFID technology. Other RFID enabled tracking systems use mobile devices to track digital media, but do not account for asset loss or shrinkage before and after an audit has taken place. These systems prove to be costly as it involves manpower for performing the audits and visibility is only made when an audit takes place. The MediaSentry monitors digital media while is at rest and can immediately notify an enterprise when a digital tape, DVD, or other storage media is removed from its holding location.
The MediaSentry utilizes active shelving to monitor tapes in real-time, providing near-instant feedback when a tape is removed from shelving or misplaced at another location. BA Systems designed the system’s media shelving to be modular being able to scale as an organization’s storage library increases. The MediaSentry is fully integrated providing all necessary software and hardware for checking-in or checking-out digital media and producing smart labels for LTO, DLT, and DVD media.
The MediaSentry was demonstrated at the Maryland Judiciary Institute in the presence of representatives from several state agencies, including the Maryland Comptroller’s office. It was recognized by many attending IT directors as being a low-cost, yet production efficient solution for managing the ever increasing amount of data backups and application media used by many IT organizations.
The MediaSentry is slated for a December 2007 release, available as an evaluation kit in November 2007. The system will contain all of the necessary active shelving, RFID tags, and hardware to store up to 16 terabytes of data out-of-the-box.
