The Maryland Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs and Baltimore’s Daily Record have designated BA Systems as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Minority Business Enterprises. This program is designed to salute Maryland’s best minority and women owned businesses and highlight their achievements.
“We are honored to have received this designation and will continue to deliver to our customers the ultimate in value. Even though we are active member of the IT and RFID technology community, that is not enough, BA will continue to be a positive force in our neighborhoods and schools across the area,” remarked BA Systems CEO Ayisat Herbert.
A panel of distinguished judges chose Ayisat Herbert as an entrepreneur who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in four key areas: business development, client satisfaction, professional affiliations and community outreach.
Sharon R. Pinder, Special Secretary, Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs said, “The business owners selected for this award represent the best of the state’s more than 200,000 women and minority owned businesses. Their contributions have had a major impact in maintaining Maryland’s vibrant economy.”
BA Systems is certainly one of Maryland’s brightest and most promising companies. Since its foundation in 2003, BA has delivered solutions to customers in over 23 countries, federal and state government agencies, and some of America’s largest and most respected companies. BA’s business is expanding; the company is currently conducting a pilot of their RFID management platform; Arphidium, in the Netherlands. This system is the driving force of one of the world’s first RFID-enabled, item-level tracking systems to be deployed in a retail environment. Working with local partners, BA will be piloting Arphidium at another site in Maryland.
Ms. Herbert, along with the other MBE entrepreneurs will be honored at an awards ceremony at the Inn and Conference Center, at University of Maryland University College, in Adelphi, Maryland, on Friday, October 27.
About the MDOT MBE Program Technologies
Maryland enacted the State MBE Program in 1978, which was the same year the Federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program was enacted. Federal and State regulations were developed to provide additional detail. Businesses must apply for certification and provide evidence of ownership and control by the minority person(s) as part of the MBE certification process.
A MBE is a business that is at least 51% owned and controlled by one or more minority persons. A minority is generally defined as an individual who is African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, Native American, a Woman or a Disabled person. Additionally, the State also recognizes non-profit firms that are organized to promote the interests of the physically or mentally disabled. The Federal Government DBE Program also includes Alaskan Natives, Pacific Islanders, Aleuts, and persons who are not minorities but who are socially and economically disadvantaged in its definition. The socially and economically disadvantaged owners must demonstrate longstanding, chronic and substantial disadvantage since the business is not owned by persons in the cited minority groups.
